Learn to love your belly: Strangers on the street exclaimed, “Wow! Are you big! Must be any day now,” when I was a mere four months pregnant. After months of experiencing a pang of panic each time I caught a glimpse of my reflection, I finally came to love my belly in a pregnancy photo shoot my girlfriend gave to me.

The photographer was so supportive that I finally began to see myself how others did—a beautiful pregnant woman.

Pregnancy Tip 2:

Beg and borrow maternity clothes: No matter how ugly and how huge some of the maternity pieces seem, accept them all. You truly don’t know how big you may get and how comfortable those hideous panels might be later on. Put away your pre-pregnancy clothes once you grow out of them so you aren’t constantly grieving the loss of your old wardrobe.

Let go of your due date: Did you know only 4% of babies are born on their actual due date? Who knew! Once I found out that it is perfectly normal for a baby to arrive anytime between 37 and 42 weeks of pregnancy, I let go of my due date altogether and followed the scout motto of “be prepared” (at any time during that five week window).

Learn to enjoy your admiring public: Yes, strangers will sometimes see your belly as public property and dish out a host of comments and advice. My husband helped me to start having fun with this new celebrity status. For instance after being annoyed by comments such as,

“Looks like your due any time now!” my husband suggested I say things like, “Yup, any minute now!” or even joke, “Can you believe I’m not due for another 8 months?!” The fact of the matter is most people actually mean well—this milestone in your life brings up fond memories for them.

Find a health care practitioner you love: The ups and downs of your pregnancy require special support and pregnancy resources. Find someone who welcomes your questions, puts your fears to rest and supports you in having the best pregnancy and delivery you can.

For me I found this support in my midwives who gave me one hour session and even made house calls. Plus, once I found out my midwives’ statistics on c-sections, forceps use and episiotomies I was hooked! Other friends hired a doula (birth coach), or had a doctor they loved, and were thrilled with the care they received.

The extra tummy fat, the weak stomach muscles and the scar tissue to the pelvic floor or the C section are all an issue to the new mother. Energy levels are low and the work load never ends.

I have given birth to 3 boys all per vagina so I did not have the stomach muscles after C section problems. I did have a separation of the rectus centrally and some vaginal tearing. I did not ask my doctor when I can exercise after giving birth because I knew he would say 6weeks.

How to lose pregnancy tummy fat comes down to diet and time to exercise. No rocket science in that answer. The breastfeeding mother is more likely to lose the pregnancy tummy fat quicker than the bottle feeding mother. This is due to the amount of energy used by the body to produce milk. Not all mothers who breastfeed will know how to lose pregnancy tummy fat fast though just by breastfeeding. Following a sensible balanced diet of protein and carbs will ensure a good supply of milk. Snacking on nuts and fruit is always good for the baby too. Now let’s look at exercise.

The sooner you start the better. Gently though. This of course depends on what exercises you start with. The main focus for so many mothers is the stomach muscles. These are stretched and often separated centrally. The pelvic floor is also damaged and needs attention sooner than later.A new mother must test for the separation before starting any exercise program. I will discuss this below. Post C section exercises must be monitored more carefully and not progressed until complete healing. Starting pure Pilates breathing exercises can be immediate, though for all mothers. How do you Test for Abdominal Separation after Pregnancy?

This is an easy test that any mother can perform but probably best tested by a Physiotherapist. I have documented this in many articles. The test must be done prior to starting any post partum exercises. The stomach muscles after C section also need to be tested but only once the C section is healed. Post C section exercises must wait until the wound is healed.

A test for abdominal separation after pregnancy.

o Lie on your back with your knees bent and your feet flat on the floor.o Place your hands flat on your abdomen with your fingers pointed towards your each othero Just at and below your belly button dig your finger in deep to your belly.o Lift your head and shoulders off the floor and feel the abdominal muscle tighteno If you feel a gap or bulge in your abdomen, you may have an abdominal separation after pregnancy.o Do this test 2-3 times and make sure you can feel the 2 ridges of the long rectus muscle.o The muscle separation pregnancy test is very valid and it may be gap up to 10cm wide.

These need to be performed slowly and with your complete attention. The post pregnancy stomach must be exercised by understanding and having complete control of the Transverse Abdominal muscle.
